Do you know anyone with an addiction? Of
course the answer to that question is yes. Do you have a loved one or family member with an addiction? Unfortunately, the answer to that question is likely to be yes as well. Addictions of many kinds are rampant in our culture...work, rescuing, relationships, sex, prescription medications, video games, the Internet, pornography, food, alcohol, Iphones, etc. What can you proactively do if your loved one is ensnared in a destructive addiction? Do you have to sit by powerlessly watching as the addiction destroys your loved one and hurts everyone around them? Fortunately, the answer to that question is an emphatic NO! There is an extremely powerful tool that is increasingly being employed to break through the denial of addicts and get them into treatment - INTERVENTION.
I was honored to be able to participate in an Intervention this weekend. While I can of course not share anything specifics about this particular Intervention I can say that I thought that it was an amazing process. It is family and friends being a community of caring and truth as they reach out to a loved one with accountability and huge hearts. One of the top Interventionists in the country works out of Muncie! His name is Bruce Perkins, MA, NCACII, CAC, LMFT, LSW
He says "If you love someone who is suffering from an alcohol or drug problem, you now have a reason to be hopeful. There is a gentle, dignified and organized way to help your loved one gain insight into the need for seeking help.
Intervention is a loving, gracious, respectful, firm and honest act of love which provides a lifeline for alcoholics and drug addicts to seek the help they need. Family members, caring friends and sometimes co-workers come together in a loving united front to voice their love and concern in a well-planned manner. The goal is to support, encourage, inspire and direct the addicted person to seek treatment immediately. Having a professional interventionist present will facilitate the process, which includes dealing with troublesome emotions while making difficult decisions with family or friends. There is hope for your loved one with a family counselor in the highly specialized field of intervention."

If you aren't famililar with Interventions there is an excellent example of the process of Intervention in a 37 minute video called Sandra's Intervention. It is a very moving account of a family's Intervention with a presciption addict mother and wife.
